Monthly Archives: June 2018

So as promised, I ripped the WTB tires off my Checkpoint and I found a set of Bonty XR0’s in 2.0. I forgot they even had this tread pattern. So minimal.  I will like these tires better than the Bontys I originally put on. They mount up without any headaches. The tire has a nice round profile to it. The 29-0’s I had on before were so square.

Big tires.

Check out that pattern. Crazy minimal. And perfect for the bike. They look too big but they fit fine. I had to adjust the rear stranglehold back as far as it goes but I would not have had to go all the way back. That lengthens the wheelbase 20mm. I can’t wait to ride it. It’s been a busy week with an employee on jury duty. But I will grab the bike and go soon. In fact I want to ride it home tonite and back to work tomorrow.

I also gave the MTB some love today with the custom Issi gold pedals to match the driveline. When I see shit like this I have to go for it. When I think about it I have no choice. It’s a must do. When your a bike store owner its part of the oath you take.

Im going to call this the last post of the week as I am planning a quick weekend up in Marquette. Nothing is set in stone but the store will be at full power of employees and I need to just go for it. Leave early Saturday, drive the 4 hours and ride Saturday aft, overnight and then ride again Sunday morn. Then home in the aft. I’ll be solo but I dont care. Im too slow to ride with anyone anyway. Especially there. But I gatta keep an eye on the weather. It would be a bummer to spend the time and money just to get rained out. That happened to me once a few years back and it was a pretty crappy time. I think I left with one more day paid for the hotel.

And Im still planning the Hayward trip for July 14\15. That’s in two weeks. Trying to make up for lost time from this spring I guess. This is kinda set in store as I have my room booked. But the longer drive will have me leaving Friday morn. Ride Friday aft, Saturday midday and

Sunday morn before the long drive home. I’ve got that drive down to a tick less than 5 hours… My room is booked but I might look into camping. I could save $150 bucks. Will see.

That’s about it for this week. Down one employee this week had no riding but that should change next week if things get back to normal. And I hope they do.

Have a great weekend and wish me luck on the Marquette get away.

Ride Disaster

Finally a ride I can post about.

So I brought both the MTB and the Checkpoint home with me to ride on Sunday. As the sign points out, it was the Checkpoint as I just did not feel like driving anywhere to ride. So I left home thinking at least a 3 hour ride. The weather was about as good as it gets. 70 and sunny.

I was having a great ride along the lakeshore and planned on hitting this up again on the ride home. I love rides that I can stop and take it all in every once in a while.

And I did just that. After a nice ride along the lake I planned to hit up some woods near our State Park and thats where I got the first pic above. I know I say this a lot but I just love the Checkpoint. Or any cross bike for that matter. So many options on a ride. I hit the woods about a hour into the ride. Stopped a few times to eat and drink. Alas the serenity was disturbed by the inevitable flat tire. Not sure what happened but it seemed the tube just let go by the stem. Then I noticed I had a 28m tube in a 42m tire. To be expected I guess. So I change the tube out. Needed two co2’s to fill it. And off I went.

If you remembered when I mounted these tires on these rims I could not get them to bead up. I eventually blasted the tires close to 100 psi to get them up on the rim. It was scary. Well, of course when I threw the new tube in it did not bead up and i had good wobble in the tire when I got back to the pavement. So much that I turned back for home. It was just awful to ride and drove me nuts. When this happens Im not sure if its the rim or the tire but probably a combo of both.

Anyway, I decided that these tires are gone the minute I get back to the shop. They look cool and all but I can fight them every time I need to put a tube in. So as I wobbled back home all I could think about it the constant thump in the back tire. About halfway home disaster number two hits. Im looking around, not paying attention to what Im doing and hit a hole in the road by some construction. At the last minute I tried to hop it, going about 12mph or so. I got the front tire past it but the rear hit the edge square on and blew the rear tire for the second time. It hit so hard I was certain I broke the rim.

This was the crime scene. My rear tire hit so hard I can’t believe it didn’t shatter. I happy not to have hit the pavement. Anyway, I did not have another tube so it was to the cell phone to find a ride home. I was still about 5 miles from the house.

I found a ride and got home. Did a quick visual on the rim and could not find anything. I’ll do another one today. And maybe the rear of the frame too. I hit that hard.

Hopefully I will not find anything and I will be pulling off those tires and putting the 29er MTB tires back on. They fit and mounted up just fine.

So that was finally a ride I can write about. But not for the right reason. I guess you gotta have a bad ride once in while to enjoy all the good ones. And the good ones always outnumber the bad 100 to 1.

Even Busier

So Wednesday I had my first Long Ride Wednesday (LRW). How long? 29 miles. Big whoop. But a big deal for me. I hope to keep building on this Wednesday. Once everyone else in the store knows about it I can keep a set schedule around it. And that will be the case. Every Wednesday. Increasing mileage as we go.

I miss this bike. I miss that trail.

Then, on top of that a friend is in town and I did get to do another nooner Thursday. Two days in a row. I’ll practically be at race fitness after that (not).

Besides those two rides its been the busiest week in the store and I look the part today. Very tired. Need more sleep.

I’ll try to ride a bit tomorrow morn but not sure how much. Definitely not the group ride. Im pretty much alone in the store tomorrow. I do have some help in the morning tho….

I realize these posts get boring during busy times. Even my bike rides are hurried. I quick get kitted up, get out the door and ride, then at some point hurry back only to have to run to the bathroom to change back into work clothes and back on the sales floor. Sometimes I dont have time to put my shoes back on and work the floor in socks…

That’s the kind of rides I’ve been doing this week but still… a ride is a ride and better that no rides. Two road rides this week. 55 miles.

I sure can use the day off Sunday and hope I can ride the MTB a bit.

Have a good weekend.

So Busy

I’ve come to the conclusion that farmers and bike shop owners are the same. I have kinda been both in my life so far. We both complain about the weather: too hot, too cold, to much rain, not enough rain. Also we complain when its so slow and now when its so busy.

But in all shop owners defence its never a happy medium. Being a bike store in Wisconsin in winter has its slow rough patches. And we complain. Now, in June, the store’s tech shop is out into next week and thats just as stressful. You just have to roll up your sleeves and go.. One bike at a time. Its either 5 mph or 100 mph. No inbetween.

I did have a pretty good riding weekend. 32 miles on the road bike on Saturday. I brought in extra help in the store so I could have a easy weekend.

Taking a break.

Its pretty much been game on since late March for me. I was only in store Saturday two hours. That was nice. And sadly I think that 32 miles was my longest ride of the year. Remember my so called comeback two months ago? That went by the wayside pretty quick.

Sunday I had a very nice MTB ride. About a hour and a half in 90+ degrees. Still, it was a very nice ride. I climbed a little, went fast a little and rode slow a little. Almost crashed a little and stopped to take in the woods a little. But after that I headed home to take a nap in my air conditioned house. I did not come out much the rest of the day. It was even too hot to sit on the lawn mower to cut the grass. It was Father’s Day so I just did pretty much nothing.

All in all a great weekend. Looking forward Im going to try and get Long Ride Wednesday going again. I have new help in the store and she’s doing very well. That takes some load off of me and will let me get out more. I even have a few weekends in the works. More about them as they come to be.

One is set in stone. July 13 to 15 I will be in Cable for this ride. I missed it last year. I will be doing the shorter distance which is 21 miles of singletrack. Still a long ass ride for me. I already have my help lined up in the store. Barring any catastrophes I should be there.

I better get back to work. Besides the repairs I have a boat load of new bikes coming today….
