Fake Spring

Today, as in yesterday, is another awesome morning. Yesterday the high was 59 and that prompted a bike ride before work. 4 of us headed out for a quick 20 miles. Of course, I was extremely overdressed. But I did get to ride in my summer shoes. That was nice. Still trying to figure out the best route from the new store. But it will come in time.

Winter will return tomorrow. A couple inches of snow called for. Whatever.

This morn I had a good visit to my happy place. This will not be as frequent with the new store being on the other side of town. But I appreciate every time I get out there. It was a very nice visit to my fav bench. Just sat there and pondered life’s questions and issues.

As in last year, the cranes are back already. I dont know if that means a early spring or not. Or its just the time they come back regardless.

825 today

My Borealis Crestone fat bike is sold. I have to give it up as soon as I get back for the Birkie on March 12. That means I only have Pinky to ride for awhile. That’s not a bad thing. But I need to figure out what Im going to do for bikes this summer. Right now I have no idea. I do have one new bike (frame) coming. Trek wont let me tell you about until March 1st but thats tomorrow and Im sure it will be all over their web and social media. When you see it, thats the frame Im getting. Due here March 15th or so. You’ll know it when you see it. Completely new bike.

Yesterday after I got back from my ride I left my Bontrager Flare City light on in the store.

It ran bright for 8 hours. Then on battery saving mode for another hour. Many years we rode without this stuff. Back in the day these bright lights were not even born yet. But today I dont leave home without it. Currently Im using the City version of the Flare but the standard Flare R is a bit brighter. It’s bigger too and some of the roadies who hate hanging stuff on their super light and aero bikes like the smaller version of stuff like this light. It still is bright enough. Be safe out there.

As I explore the mall area Im in now I found these in our parking lot. Cutting edge tech here. I guess. I’ll keep an eye on these and see if any Teslas even park here….

That’s about it for the mid week report. Crap weather is coming in the next two days so I doubt any riding until Friday morn. Saturday group ride for sure.

Bike Ride\Birkie

Im up there near the centerline…

I rode my bike. This was the first real ride since Feb 3rd. I guess I kinda knew the lack of riding would come with the store move. My weight has skyrocketed to numbers I thought I would never see. To embarrassed to even say. I have my work cut out for me. But this scenario is common for me in February. The lack of exercise during the winter months hits me right about this time. With no snow\no skiing its been a rough one.

But slowly the mornings are freeing back up and I plan another ride tomorrow morning. It’s going to be near 50 degrees by noon tomorrow. Another road ride on Pinky. First ride from the new store. We’ve got two bike specific trails that meet right in front of the mall we are in. Perfect location for a bike store and one of the main reasons I moved here.

Saturdays ride was about 20 miles. I was sore but acually felt better than I thought I would. I didn’t even think I had 20 in me at this point. But it felt good to get back on a bike and I need to build up some momentum into spring. Even if my MPH average was only 12.

In fact, in two weeks I have the Fat Bike Birkie. I have done all of these events to date and last year was my only bike race I did. Most likely this year too. This will be the sixth year.

This year it will be a paid group ride for me. Just finish. In fact I will keep it in cruise mode as much as I can in hopes to get a trail ride in later in the afternoon.

2017 (last year) was 2 degrees and no snow. I was glad to have the Farley EX.
2016. Look at my face. I out sprinted this guy at the finish for 245th place. I was so embarrassed I did that.
2015. I did OK at the race but everyone else was blown out so I hit the trails alone. I got back just before sunset….

2014 I had my 907 Whiteout. And the snow was deep up in the northwoods. I did OK in the race also. Back then it was me and maybe one other going up there. Now a bunch of riders in the area go up. At one time we had a group of 12 there. Then others in the group split up into their own groups.

I still remember the first one in 2013.  We stayed at Telemark. In fact it closed the day after we left. We were in the group that was the last to stay there before it went belly up for the last time. It was quite the experience.

Click here for a little on that historic stay.

And here is more on that stay.

And thus ends my Fat Bike Birkie history.

Hayward area continues to be my favorite place to visit. And is on my list of places to retire to. Running neck and neck with Marquette, MI. It’s a long shot but I still have hope.

I hope to get in a couple rides this week. It’s time to start training for the race in 12 days.

Catching Up

So with the store consuming me I have to catch up with current events, First off is the weather. 7 days ago we have great skiing. I tried to get out but to no avail. And here is what we have today. Once agin we get rain instead of snow and all the snow is gone and we are back to flooding. Just south of here they got over 2 inches or rain, we got less but its enough to end all skiing. I am pretty much done. Done with skiing, selling\renting skis. I skied twice this year. Which is just one less than last year. Thats 5 times in the last two years. Sure, we could get some snow again, and probably will. But such snow so late in the year has nobody thinking of skiing anymore. Everybody’s mind just moves on. The Birkie is this weekend and even if we did have snow most of the avid skiers cut way back after this weekend. I always said March skiing could be the best but Im really not caring much. Im not ready to put storage wax on my ski’s yet but they for sure will not be thought of much anymore.

Tomorrow looks like more rain. Temps near 40 almost everyday now with a 20 degree day throw in now and then. Im already putting together my spring bike order but will wait a few weeks for that.

I hope the coffee thing goes well. I would consider ditching the ski’s. Or maybe rentals only. I say that now. we’ll see next year.

Im still hoping to get a ride in the morning. Its suppose to rain\freezing rain then. What else is new.

Here’s my new office. The smallest one I have ever had. But thats fine by me. It’s just a big “cubicle” right next to the POS counter. That’s good and bad. Good because Im close to the action, and bad because Im close to the action. I will have to be careful with any personal calls I make. Im sitting literally 5 feet from the counter and everybody will hear every word. But I think thats a small inconvenience to have. It will be nice when Im working alone.

My tiny little cubicle. Its small but I call it home.

Just 3 steps and Im in the action. And… no steps to run down when Im working in the shop. It’s all just set up better for working alone.

As I fell asleep last nite I pretty much concluded that moving to the riverfront location was a mistake. A 5 year mistake. It sure was a nice building with great views but overall was not good for the purpose I leased it for. Just having two floors was a nightmare. I always justified it saying I spent more time there than home so having a nice building along the river was just a nicer work environment. And it for sure was. But it was expensive and not good for retail. It was nice but Im glad Im glad in out.

Things are going to be so much simpler here. And cheaper. Also, where I was on the riverfront I could not do a coffee shop as one of the city’s best shops was just two doors down. And the city’s second best shop is two blocks away. And the city’s third best shop was 5 blocks away. And I really wanted to add the coffee to the business. That scenario will be much better in this new location.

The coffee bar will go in right behind the counter. I still need to have plumbing and electrical work done there to accommodate. The empty taped off section is where tables and chairs will go. Im trying to leave it empty to keep floor perspective. Actually I might go out and get two sets of table\chairs just to get perspective. Maybe this weekend.

The $8k of coffee equipment will come about mid March. So I have three weeks to get the accommodations set up to hook them up. I do have the plumber coming tomorrow to assess the situation.

It’s still weird driving here. Both my first store and the last one were just a few blocks apart so the drive was the same. I kinda did it automatically every morn. And it was on the way to the park anyway.

Now Im on the westside of town. I was about as far east as you could be, right by the lake. Now Im about as far west as you could go, not far from the Interstate. The next town west is maybe 5 blocks away. It’s just a weird feeling. I guess no different than switching to a new job.

My mornings have been so busy ongoing. But tomorrow I dont need to be in the store until 10am. So I can sneak in a visit to my fav park. Friday I dont need to be here till 11 or even later as I have help here and might take the morning off. A nice bike ride is the thought but it looks like rain then. But we’ll see.
