Thinking of Winter

I’ve been thinking about what bike to ride this winter.

On one hand I have the Crockett I just built. But when I ordered the frame I ordered canti brakes based on what I had laying around in the store to build. I’ve used that Rival\Apex driveline and at least 4 different bikes.

As for wheels I bought those direct from a Chinese manufacturer just to see whats up. They have been working out fine. Even in those gravel roads up in Hayward where they took a beating over rocks and such. Still true. I like the bike. But the lack of disk brakes is alarming. I pretty much can’t stop. But its lighter and faster than the 920 and I need to keep up to the Saturday morning group. On the other hand the stopping power for a fat guy like me is terrible. Even scary. And I gotta mention my weight has a big influence on the stopping performance. Someone much lighter would not have such an issue here.

Last winter.

So do I strip all the racks and bags off the 920. It’s got MTB wheels and hydro disks. Its heavier, no carbon fork. But seems to be a much better choice throughout the winter. Here in this pic above the drive thats on the pink Crockett today is on this bike here last winter. I have since put all the stock stuff back on the 920 to build the Crockett. Bar shifters and stand alone hydro brake levers. I dont like both of them.

I kinda like the 920 to stay on the floor in full dress tho, heck, its even half packed from the summer. Tent, bag and mattress is already in it as it sits in the pic here.

Always a nice conversation piece. Always a reminder I need to take more time off to use it in the summer.

I could sell the pink bike and ride this bike this winter. It’s better suited for it.

So do I leave the 920 as is on the floor and ride the Crockett even tho the 920 is better suited for the winter? I really dont know. I like them both. If the Cross bike was disk it would be a no brainer to keep riding it

Maybe I’ll just put the cross bike for sale and if it sells then I’ll prep the 920.

Modern day bike shop problems. Moving on.

I passed on the Tuesday nite ride. With the all day rain yesterday the woods is just too wet. I did get in 20 miles this morn on the road. I’ll try for the woods again Thursday nite. Should be dry enough if it doesn’t rain.

Weekend Update

snl-weekend-updateSo when I go all weekend without a pic this is usually what you get. My weekend report pic.

We start off Saturday with the Saturday morning group ride. It was huge this weekend. Around 25 riders. Mostly cross bikes with a few MTB’s thrown in and one old road bike. I like the bigger groups. More talking. Guys and gals who havent seen each other for awhile catching up. It’s more social.

Unfortunately I had to work so I could only ride out 45 min with the group and then had to turn around to open the store. Stupid bike store ruins all my bike rides. But a short ride is better than no ride at all.

Once at work I loaded up the Farely EX on the car for some riding in the woods on Sunday. I take everything I need with me so I dont have to go to the store on my day off.

But I woke up Sunday morn with the best intentions and proceeded to never leave the couch all day. Was one of those lazy Sundays. I watched football and ate a lot. I did walk out of the house for the first time at around 4pm to attend the Holiday Parade in town with the grandkids. Which entails getting there way too early, sitting at the curb on a lawn chair and if you are not well prepared like I was, freeze your ass off. Im pretty sure I was the only one there in shorts. But it got me out of the house anyway.

So as I get to the store today let’s look at the 10 day. As it stands today, Monday, it looks like highs in the 40’s thru Friday, then the upper 30’s to finish out the 10 day. The next temp below freezing shows to be next Saturday at 29. No snow in the 10 day.

Really, the temps are pretty close to normal and I’ll stay patient and upbeat until the middle of December. Then, it better frickin snow.

Snow watch 2016 will be a common theme for the upcoming month or so.

DSCN4872I’ve been debating weather I should just go ahead and put the stock fat tires on the Farley in lieu of the 29+ I’ve been running. I must be a little superstitious as I think that would maybe be good karma for the snow to come. I do the same thing with the ski rack on top my car. I need to get that on soon to rile up the snow Gods. Prepare for snow and it will come.

I always did the same thing years ago when I owned a trucking company. Only I did it backwards. I always told people if I buy a new plow for my pickup it won’t snow. So I told everyone that didn’t want it to snow to take up a collection. I always mounted my plow early to scare the snow Gods then. I didnt do much in the snow back then.  Today its the other way around.

Today I have nothing to do in the store. And that means one thing. I need to start on my end of year paperwork. Fun.

Black Friday Ramblings

815am Ghost ship.

Saw this ship this morning. Went to the radar and nothing shows. Im not sure what ship it is but it appears it does not exist. Ghost ship.

Then I stroll out to the park and see this guy. In the same tree that a saw them last Monday. I dont see them all summer and now I see them twice in 5 days. Weird. Wonder if its the same one?

As far as bike riding about 10 of us did a T-day morning ride. Cross bike ride with road and woods. Pretty much my favorite kind of ride. About two and a half hours. Then I came home, sat on the couch and did not get up much the rest of the day. Had the kids and grandkids over and I was kinda proud of myself with not eating as much as I could.

I didnt even bring any leftover to work today.

Tomorrow I’ll jump on the Saturday group ride but will have to flip it to get back to the store as Im alone all day tomorrow. No biggie. Sunday is wide open and Im sure will be a MTB day. At least I hope so. The weather looks to be sunny and near 50 on Sunday. Not a very optimistic 10 day if you’re looking for snow.  Still showing highs in the 40’s. Crap.

Black Friday does not translate to bike stores. Everyone’s out buying TV’s. But it is the start of the Christmas shopping and I’ve already had a few Holiday purchases last Wednesday. Most times in a bike store your January and February make it or break it is based on December.

So let the Christmas season begin. And by that I mean snow. Please.

Mid Week

845am Tuesday

Its Tuesday morn. I’ve been cutting back my posts to 3 a week on M\W\F. Its not that I dont have the time to write but its the slowest time of the year in a bike store and I just dont have anything to write about so much. It’s the Thanksgiving week and things are really slow the days leading up to the Holiday. People traveling and getting ready for T-Day. After Thanksgiving I pray for snow and Holiday shopping.

Speaking of snow, right about now I study the National Weather Service, looking out 10 days for any. As of today, nothing. Most of the next 10 days will still have highs over the freezing mark. Bummer.

Another site I visit is John Dee. He is a weather dude living up in the U.P. of MI. And looks for snow. And is almost always in the ball park with what he see’s. So… snow watch 2016 has begun.

Tuesday Nite

Im glad I did the Tuesday nite ride last nite as its going to rain all day today. And even more snow up north. ABR is open and has 30K of trails groomed. As usual, its all rain here. The rain\snow line is about 100 miles away but might as well be a million.

Was a good ride last nite. Trails are now pretty fast with the ground a bit froze and pretty hard. Its nice to not get any mud on the bike so it can go right back in the store without a wash. A good crew too. I think everyone has fatbikes so when it get snowy they will still be there. I still have not rolled a tire in snow. Im getting anxious.

Today is the day before Turkey day and will be pretty slow. I have nothing really to do. I could brush off the storage wax on the rental ski’s but I’ll save that for later.

If I was a smart guy I would get started early on my year end accounting. I hate that stuff with a passion and usually end up putting it all off until the last minute and then have to come in some Sunday to finish it. I say after all these years why change now.

If the rain ends on time I will call out a ride tomorrow morning on the road. But a cross bike ride with a bit of woods in it. No road bikes.

That’s about it for now. Have a great Thanksgiving.
