Most of the time I don’t see the pics I take every morn until I post it here. Strange reflection in that one. Not sure what it is but there it is. An otherwise nice pic. I have a million from that spot.
4 below this morn Stayed inside. But tomorrow it will be 10 degrees warmer at about 6 so I will ski. Like I said earlier the dusting we got the other day wont bring the trails back but will make things ski able. The more I think about it I maybe will take the ski’s to Hayward. I could get in a short ski on Friday morn before everyone else get up there.
I’ll talk morn about next weekend next week. Lets just say Im happy to get away for a few days. I dont get out much so Im pumped. Even tho I’ll be up there Thursday and most of Fri alone between the riding and skiing I should be good.
Sunday here looks like to be a good day. Almost 30 degrees. Im thinking of taking a drive up to Levis Mound to ride on Sunday. Its a 2.5 hour drive but a good destination for a day trip. Will see. If not there are plenty of places to ride here at home. So either way Im riding.
And after we weekend the temps look more like normal with highs in the 20’s. I can handle that. Ride time will go way up. I hope.
As crazy at it sounds the Great Lakes are near froze to the extent as they were last year and that was near a record. Its been a crazy winter with a cold Nov, then a warm Dec, then a average Jan with no snow, and now a super cold Feb with no snow. Its the worst kind of winter. No snow yet super cold. Theres no way we can relive the nightmare that was last spring with below zero well into March. The lake so frozen that it was still in the 40’s for temps well into June.
Global warming or not. I do notice the weather is either extremely mild or extremely not. Such huge swings back and forth. The last few nights in the negatives. And the next couple also. But I do see a bit of “normal” temps on the way. 20’s most of next week. Maybe one day in the teens. So I hope thats the upswing we all have been waiting for.
The lake is now ice as far a the eye can see. The cold month of Feb has a good hold on it. We can only hope it will let go soon.
We got a little over an inch of snow on the ski trail last nite. It actually might be enough to bring it back to some sort of life. I want to get out there but its neg 5 in the morn. No way. Im too old for that.
I think Saturday morn will be in the upper single digits. Should I change my wax and go for two laps finally? Really, with Hayward pending I should be on a bike but its been decided that Im not going to push hard for or during the race. It will still be fun but with my weight so high no way am I going to come close to prior times. Like at Ore to Shore last Aug Im pretty sure Im way off in fitness and I just dont want to get upset with a poor performance.
So the plan is have a good time up there, pull out the spin bike when I get back home and wait for the temps to moderate and start getting in road miles to work on summer fitness. And I use the term fitness loosely.
So I didn’t ride last nite. Just got out of work too late. Store is open till 6 and the ride is 630. Most of the time I can bug out a few minutes early no problem but things are already picking up with bikes so I gatta stay until my shift ends. Next three days look like below zero in morn so I’ll be indoors. Next chance of outside stuff is Saturday, and thats maybe 8 or 9 in the morn. Most likely a fat bike ride in the morn. The group ride most likely will not go as a road ride a 9 degrees kinda sucks. Im considering pulling out the spin bike today…..
After the weekend things start to warm a bit. Most days in the 20’s, some a bit colder but no below zero. The 10 days says no real snow so yesterday very well have been my last ski.
Like Ive said before, late season skiing sometimes is the best of the year. Warmer temps. But is funny how at that point of the year nobody cares. The ski trails could be in great shape with a temp of 25 on a sunny Saturday and I will have no rentals out. As far as a bike\ski retail store Ive learned not to hang onto a season and move forward sooner than later. Either spring for bikes or fall for ski’s. Ive already got some spring clothing in and it will go up this week. I’ll leave the ski and snowshoe rentals up a bit longer but all the new stuff (almost sold all of it!) will be packed away for fall very soon.
Slowly but surely the fat bike mecca is switching from Marquette to Hayward,WI. Almost 800 bikes signed up for the race making it the biggest in the world. For real. The mileage of groomed trail out there has doubled since last year. Also, most ski trail systems are on the verge of letting bikes on. Only exception would be the birkie trail.
And I dont need to be invited twice to go to Hayward.
I was thinking today was the day to graduate to two laps (in a row) on the ski’s in the park. Pretty much any day its above 10 degrees in the morn is a ski day. It was 13 this morn with temps once again dropping for the rest of the week so today I thought I should give it a try. I got up early(er) to make sure I had the time but pretty much screwed everything else up. Typical.
First off I had the leftover pizza for breakfast. And of course too much of it. I was way too full. Then…. to top it off I forgot to drink. And I mean at all. Nothing. How stupid. I forgot to bring any water along. I was doomed before I even got to the park. But I did, and I clipped in the ski’s and off I went feeling like crap and rightfully so.
Within 30 feet I could tell that the ski’s were not working quite as well as Saturday as it was a full 10 degrees colder on the warmer wax. Im just not that good of skier to be switching wax temps back and forth. So I don’t. The skis were slower but not terrible.
But the trail has went from an acceptable “not terrible” to “terrible” in the last few days. Remember we are still on the snow that fell Feb 1st. The sun the last few days have expanded the bare spots and the winds we have had has covered the trail in tree needles. It was not a fun lap (just one) and I wont come back unless we get more snow. I could try and re groom to clean up the needles but there just is not enough snow to do so.
So, like January its sit and wait. And if there is any morning over 10 degrees it will now be spent on the bike. As I finished the loop up I kinda slowed down a bit and wondered if this was the last ski of the year. It could be. Who knows.
As I looked around to take it all in I spotted two eagles in a tree maybe 100 yards away. So that made me sit there even longer. I felt kinda sad thinking this could be my last ski of the year but the chances of that are slim. And if so, I did get out seven times. More than last year I think. And most of the time the best skiing comes late in the year and last year we skied well into March. But that was not always the case. Time will tell.
Looking at all the weather websites and such there looks to be a shift in the jet stream in about 10 days, keeping the colder weather north and warmer weather south. But that does not mean no snow. Look whats happening to the south of us now. But like I say, after the Fat Bike Birkie on March 7th Im ready for spring. I actually ready right now but I’ll give winter two more weeks yet. Then go away.
Tonites Tues nite fat bike ride is going to be a bit of an expedition ride. SOme of the guys have been riding on our local river and say it great. So I might give it a try but I might back out maybe. I have bad luck on rivers and such ice. Im sure its thick enough to ride on but I just have had bad luck.. I might stay in the woods. Will see. The snow cant be very deep so maybe its ridable.
